Entrepreneurship for Immigrant Women Focus of New Soap Opera
|
 |
By Diana Rohini LaVigne
W hat do you get when you put an immigrant
woman from Vietnam, China, Mexico and India together? Grand Café. Grand
Cafe is a ground-breaking soap opera, where a diverse group of women immigrants come
together to build their future. This 18-episode series is being produced by Farhana Huq, who is the CEO and founder of the non-profit organization, C.E.O. Women. The Oakland, California-
based organization helps create economic opportunities for low-income immigrant and
refugee women through teaching English, communications and entrepreneurship skills.
The film’s Indian character, Latika, is a highly creative jewelry maker
from India who struggles with being disorganized. Each segment of the series combines
intriguing personal challenges with educational elements, and works towards personal
and professional empowerment of women. Each section is followed by coaching, real-life
examples and a call to action. Reinforcing viewers’ English skills and educating women about business are the basic lessons delivered by these innovative videos.
From banking and budgeting, to customers and competition, Grand Café teaches
its viewers the key facets needed for entrepreneurial success. There
is obviously no shortage of C.E.O. Women supporters, with an all-star team developing the
film, including award-winning PBS telecourse producer Angelica Matsuno; Marissa Aroy, a director whose work has aired on PBS, HBO and The Discovery Channel; and Nina Serrano, who has produced a documentary for PBS.
