The smell of incense, the sounds of thousands of bangles clinking, the look of green and orange saris twirling by and the joining of decorative wooden sticks (dandiyas) puts the taste of India into your soul.  The recently held Navratri festival events hosted by the. Gujarati Samaj of Greater Philadelphia was the hot ticket in October and they have just gotten started.

This impressive non profit organization’s mission statement is to rejuvenate the sprit of Gujarati Samaj through unequivocal dedication, devotion and determination of several selfless personal and philanthropic contributions and build a strong bridge of society.  With such a robust mission, it’s no wonder their events reflect a packed house, enjoyment for everyone and focuses on getting families together and to express the Gujarati heritage. In an age when traditions seem to be disappearing, the Gujarati Samaj of Greater Philadelphia is showing that rich culture and heritage can be preserved.

During their Navatri festival, the live musicians, a mammoth sized gymnasium, benches for onlookers and dancers circling the Goddess Durga created entertainment for all age ranges, for Indians from all regions, and for families and singles alike.  There was something for everyone to enjoy.

“It’s a wonderful community event!  I’ve always loved this festival and this year, I was able to teach others who haven’t had the opportunity to experience it.”  Explains Renu Dalal-Jain, C.E.O. of Flair Consulting.  “The association does an amazing job.  It will inspire lots of people to get more involved.  I’m very proud of my heritage but this has given me an even stronger interest it. And I’m sure others also feel the same way.”

The Gujarati Samaj of Greater Philadelphia works towards promotion of inter-cultural understanding too and has a territory blanketing the tri-state area (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Washington, DC).  Currently they have over 2,100 members and growing at an incredibly fast rate.

“Our association which sponsors many events year round is a non profit association founded in 1995. We want to preserve our culture for the next generation,” notes Yogesh Patel, President of The Gujarati Samaj of Greater Philadelphia.  “We are trying different events over the next year to keep people interested.”

It isn’t easy to preserve one’s precious culture in today’s society with so many different and many times conflicting influences.  But this association is proving it can be done. Their attendance at events is extraordinarily high and their membership base is growing rapidly.  Although they have just gotten started, this non profit has already had a strong impact on the community.

The organization has sponsorship, volunteer and event opportunities available year round.  If you’d like to contact The Gujarati Samaj of Greater Philadelphia, please call them at 215-699-6501 or visit their website at www.tgsgp.org.  Also, you can write to them at; The Gujarati Samaj Of Greater Philadelphia,145 Gwynmont Dr, Suite 101, North Wales, PA 19454.
